Always keep an eyeon the condition of your firefighting suit. Every firefighter knows, that the difference between life and death can be a matter of small details.
A firefighter is inseparable from his fire suit. Any action in a fire scene will require a functioning fire resistant gear to ensure the safety of firefighter. And before they go out to any mission, firemen should check their equipment again on the following criteria:
1. Movement: Crouching, sitting, standing, walking and climbing stair should not expose body parts.
2. Sleeves and pants legs should be of adequate length, not too short to expose firemen and not too long to hinder the movement.
3. All openings, buttons, zipper, velcro and buckle should be opened and closed easily.
Generally, the firefighting gear will have following residuals resulting from a fire that are highly potentially harmful to firemen’s health:
1. Dirt, general waste
2. Bio-chemical material
3. Soot, burnt particle and fire extinguishing chemical used on scene
Therefore, a fireman is advised to clean and patch gears unless the status is beyond repair. In the latter case a replacement is strongly suggested. Clean and dry them according to instructions of the manufacturer, and store them in shaded and vented spaces shielded form direct sunlight exposure.
